Mark is an architect and urban strategist whose career has been shaped by a deep curiosity about how cities work and how they can work better for people. With more than two decades of international experience, he brings a thoughtful, human-centred approach to shaping the built environment, grounded in both technical expertise and lived experience.
Originally from London, Mark’s early career exposed him to some of the world’s most complex urban conditions. That global perspective continues to inform his thinking, but it is in Australia, particularly Sydney and Brisbane, where his work has found its strongest expression. Here, his passion for place, climate, and community has evolved into a focus on creating environments that are both resilient and deeply connected to the people who use them.
His work spans transport planning, civic and housing masterplans, industrial design, and major sports and recreation projects. Whether working at the scale of a city or the detail of a public space, Mark approaches each project as an opportunity to create something lasting, places that feel generous, purposeful, and alive.
A defining moment in his career is the Parramatta Aquatic Centre, awarded the 2024 AIA Sulman Medal for Public Architecture. For Mark, the project represents more than recognition; it reflects a belief in the power of civic architecture to bring people together and elevate everyday experience.
As Managing Director of the Sydney and Brisbane studios, Mark’s role extends beyond projects. He is deeply committed to building teams, mentoring emerging leaders, and shaping a culture that values integrity, curiosity, and shared ambition.
Alongside his practice, Mark remains closely connected to education and the future of the profession. He regularly teaches and contributes to design critique at leading Australian universities, and in 2025 was appointed to the NSW State Design Review Panel, an opportunity to help guide the quality and direction of the built environment at a broader scale.
Mark Gilder’s portfolio encompasses significant projects completed during his tenure as Principal at Grimshaw Sydney and in earlier practice experience in Australia and the UK.
